British degrees via Universal College Bangladesh equip students for global careers: UCLan's Priestley

Sarah Priestley, project manager for International Partnerships at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), spoke with Md Belal Hossen of The Business Standard about how British degrees offered through Universal College Bangladesh are equipping Bangladeshi students with global skills in cyber security, business, and more

UCLan is expanding globally through international partnerships. How does this benefit students in countries like Bangladesh, and why is this collaboration significant?

Our international partnerships aim to make top-quality UK education more accessible – and Bangladesh is a key focus. Through the college, students can now earn British degrees in business, marketing, software engineering, and cybersecurity, all while staying in the country.

The cybersecurity programme is especially notable as it's the first of its kind at this level in Bangladesh, matching UK standards. As digital threats grow, particularly in developing economies, this programme equips students with the skills to build strong careers and protect national systems. It's not just about education—it's about building resilience and opening doors to global opportunities.

How do Bangladeshi students compare with their international peers in fields like cybersecurity? Are they truly prepared to compete globally?

Yes, absolutely—and I say that with confidence. One of the strengths of our partnership model is that students at UCB get the same academic experience as those at our main campus in Preston, UK. The curriculum is the same, the standards are high, and the degrees are identical. This ensures global recognition and equal learning outcomes.

Bangladeshi students show remarkable energy and dedication. In cybersecurity—a demanding field—they often excel due to their drive and adaptability. We see clear potential for them to become global professionals and innovators. Our role is to support them with world-class education and guidance.

How do you ensure UCLan degrees at UCB meet the same academic standards as in the UK?

Academic consistency is crucial. We follow strict quality checks aligned with UCLan standards. UK-based academic staff regularly visit UCB to support teachers and students.

We also review assessments and course content to ensure they remain consistent. The goal is to give Bangladeshi students the same education and qualifications as in the UK.

The UK has changed its migration policies several times recently. Has this affected international partnerships or transnational education?

With over 35 years of international experience, we're used to policy changes. While rules may shift, our commitment remains steady—to provide high-quality education to students, whether they study in the UK or through partners like UCB.

The UK government values international students for the diversity and global perspective they bring. Our model also offers flexibility—students can start in Bangladesh and transfer later if they wish. Regardless of policy changes, we're committed to supporting students fully.

Can you share any standout success stories from your work with Bangladeshi students?

UCB is still quite new, but some students already have impressive business ideas. UCLan is known for supporting student start-ups, and I believe we'll soon see more success stories from Bangladesh.

Oxford and Cambridge are well-known. Why should Bangladeshi students consider UCLan?

While Oxford and Cambridge are prestigious, UCLan focuses on practical, industry-relevant education that aligns with today's job market. Our courses are shaped by business input, ensuring graduates have real-world skills and professional connections.

We also offer a warm, supportive community that helps students grow academically and personally. For Bangladeshi students seeking strong academics along with job-ready skills, UCLan is a smart choice.

What advice do you have for Bangladeshi students and parents considering UCB and UCLan?

I encourage viewing this as an investment in education and future careers. UCLan's partnership with UCB offers a UK-accredited degree in Bangladesh with the same quality as in the UK.

It's about more than a certificate—it's about gaining practical skills, building global networks, and preparing for jobs worldwide. For parents, UCB offers a safe, supportive environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.
