Known as the Sun King, Louis XIV made himself the dazzling centre of French power, with the sun symbolising his role as the nation's guiding force. He strengthened absolute monarchy, centralised royal authority and made France the dominant power in Europe, while turning Versailles into the spectacular heart of royal France.
