The next generation of Rabindra Sangeet singers

Today is the death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. His songs have inspired artistes of all generations. Popular singers Mahtim Sakib and Abanti Shithi are among a new generation of artists who are at the forefront of taking Tagore's songs to the youth of this day and age.

The two artistes recently spoke to The Business Standard about the undying appeal of Rabindra Sangeet and their personal singing careers. 

Mahtim Sakib

Rabindra Sangeet has an everlasting appeal to every generation. Mahtim Sakib, a young singer who is known for his Rabindra Sangeet performances, says, "I have sung three Rabindranath songs so far. The audience have appreciated it. I have received advice regarding my singing as well. But to be honest, I sing Rabindra Sangeet just as a hobby."

When asked about how he feels singing the Nobel laureate's song, Mahtim said, "Every song tells a different story. When we listen to a song, I make up a story inside my head - the singing gets easier that way."

"Rabindranath is deeply rooted in our cultural conscience. I always try to give my best while singing a Rabindra Sangeet," he added.
Mahtim has sung three Rabindra Sangeets: Amaro Porano Jaha Chay, O Amar Desher Mati and Mon Mor Megher Shongi.

Mahtim has also released eight new soundtracks for Eid dramas lately.

Mahtim became the first runner up of "Marks Allrounder 2010," a talent hunt show for children. After that, he got busy with studies although he continued his passion for music. Two years ago, he covered the song "Ei Mon Tomake Dilam," originally sung by Sabina Yeasmin. Sabina Yeasmin herself praised Mahtim for the cover song. Mahtim is currently doing his A Levels and aspires to study Music abroad.

Abanti Shithi

Singer Abanti Shithi have always liked performing Rabindra Sangeet. "I frequently sing Rabindra Sangeet during live shows," Shithi told The Business Standard. "I love performing Rabindra Sangeet, but I cannot explain why I love it so much," she added.

Shithi have been training to sing from her childhood. But Rabindra Sangeet was always a big part of her singing career. 

The singer said she has performed numerous Rabindra Sangeets, but only two of her renditions are available on YouTube. The two songs are "Jagorone Bivabori" and "Tomar Khola Hawa." Another song is awaiting release.

Shithi was one of the top ten contestants of the musical reality show "CloseUp 1" in 2012. After finishing her SSC and HSC in Jamalpur, she graduated in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar University. Besides singing, she has also worked as a faculty at a private university.

Last year, Shithi participated in the Indian reality show "Saregamapa." She made it to the top ten performers of the singing competition. But she is also famous for her "cup song" videos. She has used cups as music instrument in her videos. Besides, her whistling adds eccentricity to her songs.

Last Eid, Shithi released two songs. She is currently busy making new songs.
