The US Embassy in Dhaka has warned the public against fake social media profiles impersonating US diplomats, saying scammers may use such accounts to solicit money or personal financial information.
The embassy issued the warning in a Facebook post today (15 September).
According to the post, scammers may create fake social media profiles using the names, photographs or identities of US diplomats and contact people through those accounts to obtain money or sensitive financial information.

The embassy clarified that none of its employees would ask anyone online for money, gift cards or personal financial information.
It advised people who receive such requests to treat them as potential scams and avoid responding.
The embassy specifically urged the public not to respond to messages from fake accounts or send money under any circumstances.
"Do not respond. Do not send money," the embassy said in its warning.
The embassy also advised people not to share personal financial information online, particularly when contacted by accounts claiming to represent US diplomats.
