Brahmanbaria MP’s vaccination photo op draws flak

A female lawmaker's photo op mimicking Covid-19 vaccination in her constituency in Brahmanbaria's Sarail upazila has caused controversy.

The reserved seat parliamentarian, Umme Fatema Nazma Begum alias Sheuly Azad, inaugurated the vaccination campaign at Sarail Upazila Health Complex as nine Brahmanbaria upazilas began the immunisation drive on Sunday.

The upazila female vice-chairman, Rokea Begum, took the first dose followed by the upazila livestock officer Jahangir Alam and the upazila Jubo League's former president Mahfuz Ali.

Prior to their vaccinations, Sheuly in a photo op pretended to get immunised and many criticised the incident.

She said the nurses were just making fun with her.

The lawmaker said the Sarail upazila vice-chairman was scared of being inoculated.

"To show her how to get vaccinated, nurses made a demonstration and they involved me in that. I was photographed at that time, but I do not know who did that," she added.

Sarail Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ariful Haque, Assistant Commissioner (land) Farzana Priyanka, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Noman Miah, and other local officials were present on the occasion.

In December last year, Sheuly prompted another controversy by handing over the freedom fighter certificate to a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Ashuganj upazila.

After that, the freedom fighters of Sarail called for boycotting her, alleging that she had underestimated them.
