Many of us now have to stay indoors because of the coronavirus outbreak. As much as we are longing to go out, it is for our own safety that we do not leave our houses. But this should not bar us from indulging into DIY facial masks and simply feel good.

These are easy to prepare and require ingredients available in our pantries or refrigerators. Make sure to have a patch test before using the masks because although herbal, they might cause your skin to react. Have fun while making these and do not forget to pamper yourself once in a while. Stay safe, stay relaxed!

Gram flour, yoghurt and honey

Mix in 2-3 tablespoons of gram flour (besan), 1-2 tablespoons of yoghurt and a teaspoon of honey in a bowl. The besan should be bought in air-tight packets, as it is better to avoid the loose ones. You can use any yoghurt from the market, or use milk instead.

You can apply this mask after it is slightly chilled in the refrigerator, it will feel cool and relaxing on your face. Gently wash off after it sets on the skin.

Turmeric, honey and tomato mask

Although turmeric is a popular beauty ingredient, do not forget that it is also a spice! Have a patch test beforehand to make sure you do not have rashes or allergies. For this mask, use fresh turmeric paste and not the powdered one. Powdered turmeric should be used in small pinches only.

In a glass bowl, put 2-3 teaspoons of turmeric paste, 1-2 teaspoons of honey and 2-3 teaspoons of fresh tomato juice. Mix thoroughly and apply on skin. When it becomes dry, wash off with water. There might be a yellowish stain but do not worry, it goes away within a day or two.

Sandalwood and lemon mask

Known for its cooling properties, sandalwood is good for any skin type. You can use its powdered form or buy bars which are just as good. Sandalwood, lemon juice and rosewater makes an easy facial mask which smells heavenly. Any good quality rosewater will work. Use only few drops of lemon juice because it is acidic.

Lemon and honey mask

Mix lemon juice and honey together and apply on your face. Do not leave this mask for too long and wash off as soon as it is half-dried. You could add few drops of olive oil if you have dry skin.

Saffron, milk and coconut oil

Saffron is expensive, but you will only need 3-4 strands of it. Soak them in water or milk overnight. Put in drops of coconut oil in the liquid and use the mixture with cotton balls. It is a liquid so be careful while applying. This is more suitable for those with dry, flaky skin. It can also be used as an anti-ageing mask.

Aloe vera mask

Aloe Vera gel is moisturising and good for sun burns. If you have aloe vera plants at home, you are lucky, but if you do not, feel free to use the ones in tubes or tubs. The gooey, clear gel can be directly applied on the skin. If you use the fresh version, be careful while scraping them from the leaves, so that bits of the leaves do not come off. You can also store the leaves in the freezer.
