Cold storage is vital to food security: Commerce Secretary

Cold storage is playing a special role in the agricultural economy by preserving products like mango pulp, tomatoes, carrots, meat, and dates, said Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman while inaugurating the three-day international exhibition Safe heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration (HVACR) and Cold Chain 2025 in Dhaka today (15 May).
He added, "Recently, a Korean company has come forward to support onion preservation."
Organised by Saver International Limited, the exhibition features participation from local and international firms offering state-of-the-art solutions in cold storage and temperature-controlled logistics.
Distinguished speakers at the inaugural session included Mustafa Azad Chowdhury, president of the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association; Bilal Belut, commercial counsellor of the Turkish Embassy; Han Jingchao, president of the Trade and Services Branch of the Chinese Enterprises Association in Bangladesh (CEAB); Nur Alam, president of the ASHRAE Bangladesh Chapter; Engineer Md Hasmatuzzaman, former president of ASHRAE; and Md Faizul Alam, managing director of Saver International.
Speakers stressed the urgency of modernising and expanding Bangladesh's cold chain infrastructure to enhance the management and distribution of perishable goods. They pointed to its impact on reducing food wastage, stabilising prices, and boosting export potential.
The exhibition showcases a diverse array of energy-efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solutions tailored for cold storage and HVACR development.
Attendees from government bodies, private enterprises, and development sectors are engaging with the exhibits to explore new technologies and strategic partnerships.
The exhibition is open daily from 10:00am to 7:00pm until Saturday.
