The fisheries and livestock ministry has directed the officials concerned to focus on averting a crisis of fish and animal feed during cyclone Amphan and its fallout.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Wednesday issued the instruction for the officials of the livestock and fisheries departments – during an emergency videoconference from the ministry on tackling the damage to fisheries and livestock sectors during the cyclone.

He said, "We have to convince the conservative people to move their animals to safety. If necessary, we will need the help of law enforcement agencies."

The minister asked the officials to inform the ministry about how many fishing trawlers still remain on big rivers and at sea.

At the same time, he has directed the officials to submit reports on the number of animals that have been moved to safety and how many fish enclosures have been secured so far.

"We have to try to bring back fishing trawlers that remain on big rivers and at sea," he said, addressing the officials.

The minister said, "We have to protect growers and farmers. Otherwise, we will be endangered. For this, we have to help them seriously. We have to monitor the control rooms of every district."

He asked the livestock and fisheries departments to properly monitor the distribution of animal feed in coordination with district administrations so that the allotted feed reaches real farmers.

"If you work actively, fishermen and cattle rearers will not face losses as they have in the past," he added.

The meeting took a number of decisions that include providing instant relief facilities during and after the disaster – from revenue or projects.
