Seven trucks carrying Indian onions have been waiting to enter Bangladesh through Bhomra land port in Satkhira.

Authorities said approval had been sought from the Bhomra Port Assistant Commissioner's Office for the entry of the trucks.

"Today is the first day of importing onions from India after it was stopped on September 14 under the direction of the Indian government," said Maqsood Khan, treasurer of the Bhomra C&F Agents Association.

He also said there may be a possibility of importing 30 trucks of onions on the first day.

According to Akbar Ali, revenue officer at the port, "Traders have taken permission to import seven trucks of onions from India to enter Bangladesh through Bhomra port till 2.30 pm. These trucks are now waiting to enter the country through the Indian port of Ghojadanga."

He said that there is still a chance to get approval and after 6 pm, it will be known how many trucks of onions entered the country.

In the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic, India stopped exporting onions, as a consequence the onion market in Bangladesh became unstable.

The price had gone up and onions were being sold at TK250-300 per kg in the retail market.

However, towards the end of the year, on December 29, India lifted the ban on onion exports. After that, onion import from India has started again.
