UNDP and AGO sign mou to advance justice and rule of law reforms
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Bangladesh, represented by the Attorney General's Office (AGO), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 1 December 2025 to continue collaboration on justice and rule of law reforms, including through the Legal Internship Programme 2025–2026.
The initiative aims to strengthen legal research capacity and develop a new generation of efficient and skilled law graduates.
Md Asaduzzaman, Attorney General for Bangladesh, and Stefan Liller, Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations.
Earlier, the AGO, in partnership with UNDP, launched the inaugural AGO Internship Programme 2025 on 14 October at the Attorney General's Office, Supreme Court. The first cohort is already underway, with 25 recent law graduates from four universities placed at the Attorney General's Office. The interns are receiving direct guidance from experienced lawyers and are participating in daily legal processes within the Supreme Court premises.
The partnership aligns with UNDP's commitment to advancing the rule of law, human rights, access to justice and effective public institutions under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and the UNDP Country Programme Document (CPD).
Under the MoU, the Attorney General's Office will host and mentor selected law graduates for up to six months per cohort, offering hands-on experience in legal research, courtroom proceedings and professional ethics. A core committee will guide the programme's learning objectives to ensure that interns gain a strong foundation in the principles of justice, ethics and public service.
UNDP Bangladesh will provide technical assistance, training sessions and exposure opportunities on rule of law, human rights, gender justice and professional conduct. UNDP will also work with the AGO and participating universities to ensure smooth coordination and high-quality implementation throughout the programme.
This partnership marks a significant step towards nurturing legal excellence in Bangladesh by bridging academic learning with practical, institution-based experience and empowering young graduates to contribute meaningfully to a just and equitable society.
