ULAB moves closer to joint PhD programme with University of Portsmouth
The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) has moved closer to offering a joint PhD programme with the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, following the soft launch of the initiative.
The one-hour-and-50-minute programme, held via Zoom on 6 August, brought together senior officials and academics from both universities, project partners, and representatives involved in quality assurance and international engagement, according to a press release.
ULAB Vice Chancellor Professor Shamsad Mortuza, PhD, delivered the welcome remarks.

University of Portsmouth Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) Bobby Mehta and Associate Dean (Global Engagement) Jacqueline Priego, PhD, represented the UK university. In contrast, ULAB Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jude William R Genilo, PhD, represented ULAB.
Other participants included the Federation of Bangladesh Human Resource Organisations' Founder President, Md Musharoff Hossain, PhD, a project partner from Bangladesh, and Piers Wall of the UK's Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education.
ULAB GED Department Head Professor Shahnaj Husne Jahan, PhD; UK-side Liaison Jaina Hunt; and ULAB-side Project Director Parvez Mahmud, PhD, also attended.
Following the opening speeches, an interactive workshop on transnational education was held.
Participants were divided into two groups to discuss key issues related to transnational education and share their experiences, views, and recommendations on the development of the proposed joint PhD programme.
At the end of the discussions, Professor Jude William R Genilo and Jacqueline Priego presented summaries of the main issues, suggestions, and recommendations raised by the two groups.
The soft launch marks a milestone in ULAB's efforts to expand its international partnerships and create opportunities for advanced research and doctoral education.
The proposed collaboration is expected to strengthen academic and research ties between Bangladesh and the UK while creating new opportunities for internationally connected doctoral education through transnational education.
