ULAB hosts book discussion with Alex Counts on microfinance and empowerment

The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) hosted a thought-provoking book discussion on Small Loans, Big Dreams by Alex Counts, bringing together students, academics, development professionals, and literary enthusiasts for a dynamic exchange on microfinance, social entrepreneurship, and grassroots empowerment.
The event took place at ULAB's campus in Dhaka and began with opening remarks from Professor Sarwar Uddin Ahmed, Dean of the School of Business, who highlighted the author's academic and professional journey and his efforts in translating the philosophy of Grameen Bank for global audiences.
ULAB Vice-Chancellor Professor Imran Rahman welcomed the attendees, reflecting on the lasting influence of Grameen-inspired microfinance in Bangladesh's development narrative. Ms Arzoo Ismail, Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the BBA programme, then offered an insightful overview of the book's central themes.
The highlight of the programme was the keynote discussion delivered by author Alex Counts, who addressed the audience in fluent Bangla. He shared personal stories and detailed his journey working closely with Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, describing Yunus as a teacher and lifelong influence. His reflections explored the intersection of personal experience and professional mission, delving into issues of empowerment, sustainability, and the ethical dimensions of financial inclusion across both developing and developed economies.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to explore the book's themes further and reflect on the evolving role of microfinance in today's world.
