Southeast University honours July movement martyrs

Southeast University observed 'July Remembrance 2025' with a solemn event on Friday, 18 July, to honour the sacrifices of student martyrs Abu Saeed, Mugdha, and four others who lost their lives in the historic July Movement.
Held at the university's Multipurpose Hall, the programme featured a discussion and documentary screening, aiming to reflect on the student-led protests and their lasting impact on the country's democratic journey.
The session was presided over by Professor Dr Yusuf Mahbubul Islam, Vice Chancellor of Southeast University. A special address was delivered by Mrs. Farzana Munmun, widely known as Munamma, the aunt of the martyred student Farhan Fayyaz. Professor Dr M Mofazzal Hossain, Pro Vice-Chancellor, also spoke at the event.
The programme began with the national anthem, followed by the screening of a documentary on the July Movement that captured the voices and spirit of the student protests. Professor Dr Farhana Helal Mahtab, Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences and convener of the event implementation committee, delivered the welcome remarks.
During the discussion segment, faculty members and students who were part of the July Movement shared their personal reflections, underscoring the courage and conviction that defined the protests.
Professor Dr Md Sirajul Islam, Dean of Southeast Business School, and Major General Md Anwarul Islam (Retd.), Registrar of the university, also addressed the gathering.
The event was attended by deans, department heads, faculty members, university officials, staff, and a large number of students.
Speakers emphasised the pivotal role that students played in shaping democratic discourse in Bangladesh, noting that the legacy of the July Movement remains a beacon for youth activism and civic engagement.
