South point students shine at commonwealth chess championship
Students from South Point School and College have brought pride to Bangladesh with impressive performances at the Commonwealth Chess Championship held from 8–18 November in Kuala Lumpur.
Bangladesh's rising chess talent Tashrik Shaihan Shan secured a silver medal in the Open Under-20 category after a decisive final-round victory against India's Grandmaster Shyam Nikhil. Shan earned 6 points from 9 games, finishing second overall.
In the Girls' Under-18 division, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Omnia Binte Yusuf Lubaba scored 6 points from 9 rounds to win the bronze medal for Bangladesh.
In the Blitz category, Ajan Mahmud of South Point School won the divisional award in the Under-10 section.
Other notable Bangladeshi results included:
• Girls' Under-10: WCM Warisha Haidar finished 4th.
• Open Under-10: South Point's Raihan Rashid Mughdha earned 6 points in 9 rounds, securing 5th place.
• Open Under-12: Safayet Kibria Ajan scored 5 points from 9 rounds.
• Girls' Under-12: Sidratul Muntahana Nafi scored 4 points in 9 rounds.
The 2025 championship featured strong competition with 373 players from Commonwealth nations, including 8 Grandmasters, 8 International Masters and 60 titled players.
These achievements underscore the growing promise of young Bangladeshi chess players and their ability to compete successfully on the international stage.
South Point School and College Founder Chairman Engineer M A Rashid and Malibagh Campus Principal Colonel Md Shamsul Alam, psc (Retd), congratulated the young medallists, their coaches and parents for their dedication and success.
They said the institution is committed not only to maintaining strong academic standards but also to fostering excellence in sports, debate, cultural activities and other competitions.
