NU vows to uphold values of July mass uprising

The National University has pledged to carry forward the spirit of the historic July Mass Uprising by eliminating existing disparities in higher education and fostering a sense of national consciousness among its students.
The university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr A S M Amanullah, made this commitment during a commemorative discussion held on Sunday, 20 July 2025, as part of the university's Senate programme to observe 'July Renaissance'.
Presided over by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Md Lutfar Rahman, the event honoured the sacrifice of martyrs and injured students, with a call to strengthen educational values rooted in the revolutionary ideals of the uprising.
"Nearly 70 percent of the country's higher education students are enrolled at National University, and during the July uprising, our students contributed at least 50 percent to the movement," said Professor Amanullah. "Yet their names are often absent from the official record. Their contribution cannot be limited to the martyrdom of only 26 individuals."
He announced that the university has already launched the 'July Martyr Memorial Education Scholarship', alongside a full waiver of all fees for injured students and the families of martyrs affiliated with NU colleges. "We have many more initiatives planned to preserve the legacy of the uprising and will implement them gradually," he added.
Reflecting on the broader historical context, Professor Amanullah said, "Throughout the world, many mass uprisings have failed to fulfil their true purpose due to internal disagreements. To preserve the spirit of the July uprising, we must resolve differences and uphold equality at all levels."
He urged university teachers, officers, and employees to work with honesty and sincerity to improve the quality and discipline of higher education in the country.
The discussion began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs. A documentary was also screened, highlighting the scholarship programme and financial support being extended to the families of the victims.
Speakers at the event included Dr. Md. Ashek Kabir Chowdhury, Acting Dean of Pre-Graduate Education; Md. Enamul Karim, Controller of Examinations; Moslem Uddin, Director of the Estate Department; Associate Professor Hadiuzzaman; and senior university officials, including Mia Hossain Rana, Abu Hanif Khandaker, and others. The programme was conducted by Nazimuddin Ahmed Shishim, General Secretary of the National University Officers' Association.
