NU makes IT and English mandatory to build skilled graduates
National University (NU) has made Information Technology (IT) and English compulsory subjects for undergraduate honours students to equip them as skilled human resources capable of facing future challenges.
NU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah made the announcement while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop jointly organised by NU and the government's a2i project at Mohammadpur Central College on Wednesday.
He said NU would provide full support to affiliated colleges in formulating and implementing modern curricula, along with additional assistance to students if necessary.
Prof. Amanullah acknowledged the shortage of IT teachers in colleges and said that NU was in talks with technical colleges and computer councils to address the issue. He emphasized that students in the country's colleges possess strong potential and can easily become proficient in IT if provided with proper guidance.
He called on the a2i programme and educators to develop modern, work-oriented IT curricula.
The first session of the workshop, titled "Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy", was chaired by Md Rashidul Mannaf Kabir, joint secretary of the ICT ministry and project director of the a2i programme. The second session was chaired by Professor Dr Nurul Islam, NU Pro-Vice Chancellor.
Forty teachers from eight different departments at various colleges participated in the workshop. Trainers included Md Afzal Hossain Sarwar, policy analyst and head of Future of Education, a2i; Dr Md Waliullah, principal of Mohammadpur Central College; Dr HM Ruhul Kuddus, acting dean, curriculum; Dr Nazma Tara, associate professor of computer science, NU; and Mirza Mohammad Didarul Anam, education specialist, Future of Education, a2i. Senior NU officials were also present.
