NSU hosts seminar on Bangladesh’s role in UN peacekeeping
North South University (NSU) organised a seminar on Global Peace and Harmony: Bangladesh's Role in UN Peacekeeping on 21 September at the Syndicate Hall to mark the International Day of Peace 2025.
The session was chaired by Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of NSU. The keynote address was delivered by Major General Hussain Muhammad Masihur Rahman, Commandant of the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training (BIPSOT). Major General (retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar, security adviser to Begum Khaleda Zia, attended as a special guest. Panelists included representatives from the Bangladesh Army, police, and academia.
In his address, Major General Masihur Rahman highlighted Bangladesh's proud legacy in UN peacekeeping and called for the country to be known not only as a "country of peacekeepers" but as a "nation of peace." He urged greater investment in education and humanity-centred policies to sustain peace.
Panelists emphasised the significance of peacekeeping to Bangladesh's soft power and diplomacy, while also highlighting emerging challenges such as terrorism, climate-induced conflicts, disinformation, and the need for digital adaptability. Speakers emphasized that peace remains achievable if supported by strong political leadership, effective defense and diplomacy, and inclusive development.
Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury emphasised the role of individuals in building a harmonious society. Dr M Jashim Uddin, Professor and Director of the Centre for Peace Studies at NSU, delivered the inaugural address, calling for a comprehensive national security policy and the establishment of a National Security Council.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Professor AKM Waresul Karim, dean of the School of Business and Economics, who reaffirmed Bangladesh's aspiration to contribute to a more inclusive and peaceful future.
