NSU, Chinese Embassy celebrate Dhaka–China Day 2025
North South University (NSU), with support from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Bangladesh, hosted Dhaka–China Day 2025 to celebrate the enduring friendship between Bangladesh and China.
Held at Audi 801 and the main auditorium, the day-long programme brought together scholars, policymakers, students, and cultural ambassadors for dialogue, performances and cultural exchange.
The inauguration opened with a traditional Lion Dance, symbolising prosperity and good fortune. NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury noted that NSU was the first university in South Asia to establish a Confucius Institute, which plays a key role in language training, student exchanges and cultural programmes.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh H.E. Yao Wen said relations between the two countries would continue to rise to "new heights", emphasising youth engagement and people-to-people exchanges. Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Farida Akhter stressed the potential of collaboration in trade, fisheries and technology, while NSU trustee board member Benajir Ahmed highlighted China's contributions to infrastructure and economic development.
Two technical sessions explored education, media and language. Speakers discussed Bangladesh's media portrayal of China, digital media consumption trends, and the growing importance of Mandarin for trade and employment. Challenges such as shortages of trained teachers and limited school integration were also addressed, with experts calling for stronger policy support and early language learning initiatives.
The China–Bangladesh Youth Forum featured academics and students from both nations, who shared insights on higher education, cultural adaptation, economic cooperation and people-to-people ties.
The celebrations concluded with a three-day Dhaka–China Day Film Festival, showcasing Chinese and Bangladeshi films including The Truth 1, Ne Jha 1, Utshob and The Truth 2.
