Lecture series by Dr Selim Jahan held at UAP

The Department of Business Administration (DBA) of the University of Asia Pacific (UAP), in collaboration with the Club of Finance and Accounting (CFA), successfully organised a session of its prestigious Distinguished Lecture Series on Sunday, 27 April 2025 at the UAP Auditorium.
The event featured Dr. Selim Jahan, renowned economist and former Director of the Human Development Report Office at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as the keynote speaker. Dr. Jahan delivered an insightful lecture on "The Development Journey of Bangladesh: Achievements, Challenges, and Opportunities," captivating the audience with his deep analysis and vision for the nation's future.
In his keynote speech, Dr. Jahan stated that the deterioration of the law and order situation negatively impacts social life. Despite significant progress in physical infrastructure, he noted that the country has yet to achieve the desired level of development.
Dr Jahan also highlighted a significant economic slowdown, warning that the achievements made so far could be undermined if economic stagnation continues. Speaking about reforms, he stressed the urgent need for both short-term and long-term measures. He emphasised that immediate reforms must be implemented according to the prevailing situation, especially when people's backs are against the wall, in order to provide much-needed relief.
Architect Mahbuba Haque, the UAP Board of Trustees Chairperson, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Qumrul Ahsan, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of UAP, attended as the Special Guest. Their addresses emphasised the importance of fostering academic dialogue for national development.
Other distinguished attendees included Dr Mohammad Alauddin, a Member of the Board of Trustees; Mr Qayum Reza Chowdhury, Member of the Board of Trustees; Professor Dr. M. A. Baqui Khalily, Dean of the School of Business; and Mr. Sarwar R. Chowdhury, Head of the Department of Business Administration at UAP, along with faculty members, students, and other guests.
The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment, where students and participants could interact directly with Dr. Jahan, further enriching the discussion.
Earlier, Professor Dr. Nazma Begum, Convener of the Distinguished Lecture Series, delivered the welcome address, greeting the distinguished guests, faculty members, and students. She also highlighted the significance of such sessions in enhancing academic knowledge and inspiring future leaders.
