Indonesian retail chain alfamart opens first store in Dhaka
Indonesian modern retail chain Alfamart has officially opened its first store in Dhaka, marking the company's entry into the Bangladeshi market as part of its regional expansion in South Asia.
The launch reflects growing trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Indonesia and Bangladesh.
The Alfamart operation in Bangladesh is being run through a joint venture, Alfamart Trading Bangladesh Ltd, involving Alfamart Group Indonesia, Kazi Farms Group of Bangladesh, and Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan. The partnership brings together international retail expertise, distribution capacity, and local market knowledge to develop a modern retail format in Bangladesh.
The inauguration programme began with a networking dinner for the grand launch of Alfamart Bangladesh on 26 January 2026 in Dhaka. The official opening of the first store on 27 January 2026 was attended by Listyowati, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Bangladesh and Nepal, along with representatives from business partners and the wider business community.
The first Alfamart outlet is located at Delvista Tower, Road No 113, Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan-2, one of Dhaka's key commercial areas.
In the initial phase, Alfamart plans to open more than 100 stores in Dhaka and surrounding areas. The estimated investment for the first phase is $50 million, with plans to increase investment to around $120 million in subsequent phases, alongside expansion of the store network and strengthening of logistics infrastructure.
To mark the opening, Alfamart Trading Bangladesh Ltd is offering launch promotions, including discounts on selected products, buy-one-get-one offers, and free gifts, aimed at introducing the brand's modern retail services to local consumers.
Alfamart's entry into Bangladesh is expected to provide modern retail services, create employment opportunities—particularly for women and young people—and expand distribution channels for both local and Indonesian products. The investment is also expected to facilitate knowledge transfer, and the introduction of modern retail management systems.
Bangladesh is the latest addition to Alfamart's international expansion, following its operations in the Philippines, where the company currently runs around 2,400 stores.
The Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka welcomed the opening of the Alfamart store and reiterated its support for Indonesian investment in Bangladesh and the strengthening of bilateral economic ties.
