DSCC to launch planned tree plantation initiative

As Dhaka city is losing greenery with a gradual rise in temperature over the years, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md. Shahjahan Miah on Wednesday emphasised planned tree plantation and urbanisation
As part of the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War's victory and honouring the memory of the Soviet soldiers who gave their lives in the conflict, the Russian House in Dhaka organised a tree-planting programme at Dhanmondi Lake in the city on Wednesday.
Dhaka's greenery should be restored to make the city more livable. Its population exceeds 20 million, and haphazard and unplanned constructions over the years have transformed Dhaka into a concrete jungle.
"The greenery in Dhaka is gradually disappearing. We need to rebuild our cities. Planned tree plantations can reduce Dhaka's temperature," said Md. Shahjahan Miah
"When we think of a city, we imagine more buildings and fewer trees, while in villages we expect more trees and fewer houses. We have created this divide ourselves," he said.
The construction of high-rises without planned urbanisation in the city has led to a rise in temperature over the years. Dhaka was even considered a green city in the 1960s and 1970s. Environmentalists now view it as a burning hub.
"To restore that serene green beauty, we must plant trees in harmony with nature and seasonal variations," he said.
Md Shahjahan Miah called the contribution of the then Soviet Union in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971He said Dhaka and Moscow enjoy warm relations in multilateral sectors that will reach a new height in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, Md Shahjahan Mia and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Bangladesh, Alexander G Khozin, inaugurated the "Garden of Memory" and a commemorative memorial at Dhanmondi Lake Park in honour of the 80th Anniversary of Victory Day of the Great Patriotic War.
In his remarks, Russian Ambassador Alexander G. Khozin emphasised the importance of preserving the memory of those who fought for peace and freedom and highlighted the deep historical ties between Bangladesh and Russia.

Dvoichenkov, Director of the Russian House in Dhaka, also spoke. The inauguration ceremony brought together dignitaries, diplomats, and members of the public in a shared moment of remembrance and respect.
