BTRC hosts workshop on telecommunications reform
The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) organized a consultative workshop to gather feedback from existing license holders as part of reforms in the telecommunications sector's network and licensing structure. The event took place at the BTRC building in Dhaka and was chaired by Brigadier General Iqbal Ahmed, commissioner of BTRC's Engineering and Operations Division.
Attendees included representatives from Bangladesh Bank, National Telecom Monitoring Center (NTMC), mobile operators, internet service providers, and experts from universities such as BUET and BRAC. Brigadier General Iqbal Ahmed highlighted the complexity of the existing licensing and network structure, emphasizing the need for a more accessible and equitable framework that accommodates new technologies.
Participants were divided into four groups to discuss challenges and recommendations on various topics, including network topology reform, customer service provision, national connectivity, and international connectivity. Group discussions focused on encouraging investment, promoting service neutrality, and ensuring quality service.
Each group presented ideas such as separating service licenses from spectrum licenses, consolidating fixed and mobile licenses for 5G, and prioritizing local investment in international connectivity. The collaborative effort aims to create a more efficient telecommunications environment in Bangladesh, ensuring fair competition and improved service delivery.
