Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, the BNP expressed deep sorrow over the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, who was an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency.
Earlier on Wednesday night, Singapore's Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan visited Hadi at the hospital and later called Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at 9:40pm and informed him that Hadi's condition was very critical.
Hadi, who was a potential Dhaka-8 candidate for the upcoming national election, was shot in the head on Friday (12 December) in the Old Paltan area of the capital. An assailant fired at Osman Hadi from a motorcycle that had been following him from behind while he was travelling in a battery-powered rickshaw to conduct electioneering.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery due to massive brain injury.
Doctors at DMCH described his condition as extremely critical, noting that the bullet entered above his left ear and exited through the right side of his head, affecting the brain stem.
He was later transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment and airlifted to Singapore on 15 December.
Law enforcement agencies have already identified Faisal Karim Masud as the shooter in the attack on Osman Hadi.
Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said Faisal's associate, Md Alamgir Sheikh, was riding the motorcycle used in the attack. Several investigation sources said both of them have fled to India after crossing the border illegally.
An attempted murder case was filed with Paltan Police Station on 14 December by Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of the Inqilab Mancha.
So far, police and RAB have detained and arrested 14 people in connection with the case on Osman Hadi. Among them are Faisal's father Md Humayun Kabir, 70, mother Mosammat Hashi Begum, 60, wife Saheda Parvin Samia, and brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Sipu.
