BSSF conference stresses safe, sustainable food
Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku said today that we must raise social awareness at all levels. Only by doing this can we ensure food safety for all.
He emphasised that coordinated efforts from government and private organisations are essential. These efforts are needed to protect public health and ensure a sustainable food system.
Tuku delivered these remarks as the chief guest at the 8th National Scientific Conference on 'Food Safety and Health'.
The Bangladesh Society for Safe Food organised the conference, themed 'Ensuring Safe Food for a Sustainable Future,' at the Dhaka Regency Hotel and Resort in the capital.
He warned that the uncontrolled use of harmful substances and antibiotics in food poses a severe threat. Such actions endanger public health.
Highlighting the critical role of research, he urged scientists to intensify their efforts to preserve biodiversity and natural resources.
He recalled that Bangladesh was once known as the land of 'Maach-e-Bhate Bangali.' He stressed the need for effective measures to boost fish production and protect aquatic biodiversity.
Referring to the national vision, Tuku said meeting the food demand of a large population remains a significant challenge.
He said the government is working to ensure a safe, nutritious and sustainable food system for future generations. This work is being done under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He also expressed concern over the drug menace, describing it as a major social crisis.
He urged families, society, and the state to work together. Their cooperation is needed to protect youth and steer the nation on the right path.
Professor Dr Md Khaled Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Society for Safe Food, presided over the event.
Md Shahzaman Khan, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services, and Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar, Chairman (additional charge) of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, attended as special guests.
