BSCPLC plans new links to meet rising bandwidth demand
Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) has commemorated the 20th anniversary of the nation's first submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE 4 (SMW4), on 21 May 2026—heralding the milestone as a pivotal moment in Bangladesh's digital transformation.
BSCPLC, a state-owned enterprise under the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, is listed on the capital market.
On 21 May 2006, then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia officially inaugurated Bangladesh's first submarine cable station in Cox's Bazar. The connection directly linked the country to the global information technology network for the first time, unlocking new opportunities for digital advancement.
Submarine cable connectivity subsequently served as the bedrock of Bangladesh's digital evolution, driving substantial growth in information technology, freelancing, outsourcing, e-commerce, mobile banking, education, healthcare, and digital government services.
Today, Bangladesh is connected to the global communications network through multiple international submarine cables, with BSCPLC playing a critical role in developing the country's digital infrastructure.
BSCPLC said it is working to establish additional international submarine cable connections to meet surging bandwidth demand and further reinforce Bangladesh's digital connectivity.
On the cable's 20th anniversary, BSCPLC paid tribute to then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, as well as the policymakers, engineers, officials, employees, and stakeholders whose combined efforts connected Bangladesh to the global digital network.
