BRAC University VC joins UN Dialogue on higher education and SDGs
Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar, Vice-Chancellor of BRAC University, participated in a high-level forum at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, contributing to global conversations on the role of higher education in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Professor Anwar spoke in the segment titled Institutional Reflections: Creating a Better World – Contributions of Higher Education. Addressing an international audience, he highlighted youth-led innovation, research, and community-driven impact, focusing particularly on initiatives spearheaded by BRAC University students.
The event also featured BRAC University alumnus and Millennium Fellow Srijan Banik, who shared his leadership journey and community-based projects, reflecting the university's commitment to social innovation and student empowerment.
As part of his academic visit to New York, Professor Anwar engaged with various global institutions, civil society organisations, and alumni. Discussions focused on strengthening international partnerships and expanding collaborative efforts in student-led social impact initiatives.
Potential collaborations are being explored with institutions and networks such as Columbia University, NYU Stern, Carnegie Mellon University, Springfield College, Bard College, the Clinton Global Initiative, Open Society Foundations, and the Fossil Foundation.
The event was jointly organised by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and Millennium Campus Network (MCN), with participation from representatives of Oxford University, Minerva University, Lagos State University, and De Montfort University. Several permanent representatives of UN member states also took part, reinforcing the role of academia in driving sustainable development.
In the closing session, Professor Anwar shared insights on the future of education and the importance of youth agency in creating a more inclusive, just, and sustainable world.
