Global recognition for BRAC University in Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

BRAC University has made history by winning the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award "Empowerment" trophy, having enrolled the highest number of participants worldwide in the award's non-formal education programme for 2024–2025.
The trophy was formally handed over by Sarah Cooke, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, to BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar at a ceremony held at Dhaka's RAOWA Complex on 9 September 2025. The event was hosted by the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Foundation Bangladesh, which promotes youth development through skills training, fitness, adventure, and volunteering.
Building on this recognition, BRAC University emphasises experiential learning as a central component in shaping responsible leaders. Through its Residential Semester, students live and learn in an immersive environment that emphasises community service, ethical decision-making, and problem-solving rooted in empathy.
"Experiential learning is at the core of BRAC University," said Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar. "Through the Residential Semester and programmes like the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, our students discover that leadership is not taught in classrooms alone — it is lived, practised and earned through real experiences."
This commitment is evident since the programme's inception in January 2020, as 3,147 BRAC University students have participated in award activities, making the institution a leader among 125 organisations in Bangladesh that implement it.
The "Empowerment" trophy, designed by Italian artist Lorenzo Quinn, was created using bronze, aluminium, and stainless steel to symbolise how the award empowers young people to grow, build confidence, and realise their potential.
He further noted that the recognition reflects BRAC University's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
In recognition of this milestone, senior representatives present included Tahsina Rahman, Joint Director of Student Life at BRAC University; Rizwan Bin Farouqe, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Foundation Bangladesh; and Talita Choudhury, Treasurer of the Foundation. They joined education leaders, coordinators, and volunteers in celebrating the achievement.
