BRAC University honours founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed
BRAC University marked the 90th birth anniversary of its founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, with a daylong programme at its Merul Badda campus in Dhaka, celebrating his enduring legacy and the university's 25th anniversary.
The programme, titled 'Celebration of Abed Bhai's Life and Legacy', honoured Sir Abed's lasting contributions and values, which continue to inspire efforts towards a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society.
Vice-chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar formally launched the university's silver jubilee celebrations by unveiling the anniversary logo.
Founded on 16 June 2001, the university has grown into a leading academic institution in Bangladesh.
The day's events began with a photo exhibition showcasing Sir Abed's role in advancing social development in Bangladesh and globally.
The Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Open Rated Chess Tournament 2026 drew over 300 participants from across Bangladesh.
Organisers stated that the tournament paid tribute to Sir Abed's lifelong commitment to nurturing human potential.
A friendly six-a-side football match, 'Jiboner Joygan Football Match', was organised, featuring players from BRAC Secondary School of Purbogangabordi, Faridpur Sadar, and BRAC University.
The initiative reflected Sir Abed's commitment to inclusivity, youth empowerment, and community building.
In the afternoon, students presented music, dance, and artistic performances inspired by Sir Abed's ideals and legacy.
Khairul Basher, director, Office of Communications, BRAC University, moderated the cultural segment.
The programme concluded with Tamara Hasan Abed, chairperson, Board of Trustees; Salahdin Irshad Imam, board member; Vice-chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar; Treasurer Ariful Islam; and Registrar Dave Dowland presenting awards to football tournament participants.
'We have a yearlong extensive list of celebrations, recognitions, and togetherness—building bonds within our community, the ecosystem, and partners abroad. We will involve everybody,' said Tamara Hasan Abed.
Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, an adviser at the BRAC Institute of Languages, and Tahsina Rahman, joint director of Student Life, were also present.
