Budget FY26: Govt moves to include 1,519 madrasahs under MPO scheme

The government has initiated the process of bringing 1,519 madrasahs across the country under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed announced during his budget speech today (2 June).
He stressed the government's commitment to improving madrasah education through extensive development programmes. "So far, the construction of 1,135 madrasah buildings has been completed, and work on 513 multi-storey buildings is ongoing," he said.
As part of modernisation efforts, 493 madrasahs have been equipped with multimedia classrooms. "These upgraded facilities are helping make madrasah education more modern and relevant," Salehuddin said.
He also proposed an allocation of Tk728 crore for scholarships at the Ebtedayee (primary) level and for the MPO inclusion of madrasahs.
Salehuddin further highlighted the importance of technical and vocational education in creating employment opportunities both nationally and abroad.
"Currently, the enrollment rate in technical education stands at 19%. To increase this significantly, women's polytechnic and engineering colleges are being established at each divisional level, along with polytechnic institutes at the district level and technical schools at the upazila level," he said.
In January this year, madrasah teachers organised a series of protests demanding the nationalisation of their institutions and inclusion in the MPO scheme.
In response to the mounting pressure, the Ministry of Education announced on 28 January that it had agreed in principle to nationalise all Ebtedayee madrasahs in phases.
