BGMEA denies reports of DBL, other factory closures over energy crisis

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has dismissed reports claiming that several garment factories, including those of DBL Group, have shut down due to gas and power shortages, describing the information as "completely false and baseless."

In a press release issued yesterday (3 August) the country's apex garment exporters' body said such reports, circulated by some media outlets, online platforms and social media, have created unnecessary confusion and could undermine confidence in Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) sector.

BGMEA said that although the industry is facing severe gas and electricity shortages, its member factories have managed to keep production running at around 60–70% capacity with government support.

Factory owners are making every possible effort to sustain production and ensure uninterrupted export operations despite the ongoing energy constraints, it added.

The association also clarified that many factories will remain closed on Thursday (6 August) to adjust for the upcoming government holiday on 5 August and the weekly holiday.

It said the leave adjustment would be compensated later in accordance with labour regulations and is a routine operational measure adopted during periods of gas shortages, not an indication of factory closures.

BGMEA cautioned that publishing unverified reports about factory shutdowns could create serious confusion among local and international buyers and business partners, potentially harming the credibility Bangladesh's garment industry has built over the years.

Describing the RMG sector as the backbone of the country's economy, the association urged media organisations and all stakeholders to verify information before publication and ensure objective reporting in the greater interest of the industry.
