BB warns against sample notes, misleading social media content

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has cautioned the people against using paper or objects resembling bank notes for marketing and social media content, warning that such activities are punishable offences under existing laws.

In a press release issued today (16 February) by the Department of Communications and Publications, the central bank observed that various videos and images are being circulated on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, featuring sample notes.

These notes often mimic the design and size of authentic bank notes or are sometimes produced in larger formats for use in marketing campaigns and digital content.

The central bank also noted that paper made to look like real currency is being used for various business promotions in open markets.

According to the BB, these activities facilitate the circulation of counterfeit notes and threaten to destabilize the country's overall currency management.

The BB highlighted that the creation, display, use, or distribution of any paper or object resembling bank notes is a punishable offense under Section 489(A) of the Bangladesh Penal Code, 1860.

Legal action will be taken against individuals or institutions found involved in such practices.

Furthermore, the bank warned that spreading false, misleading, or rumor-based information via digital media could be prosecuted as a punishable offense under **Section 25 of the Cyber Security Act, 2023.

The central bank has advised the people to remain vigilant, refrain from creating or sharing misleading content, and help prevent the spread of counterfeit notes.
