Banks to remain closed across Bangladesh on 5 August marking July Uprising Day

All scheduled banks across Bangladesh will remain closed on 5 August 2025, in observance of the government-declared holiday marking "July Uprising Day."

The Bangladesh Bank issued a circular today (17 July) through its Department of Off-site Supervision, instructing all scheduled banks to suspend operations on that day in compliance with the holiday announced by the government.

According to a government notification issued by the Cabinet Division on 2 July 2025, 5 August has been designated as "July Uprising Day" and declared a public holiday.

As a result, similar to other government offices and institutions, all scheduled banks will also fall under the scope of the national holiday.

In its circular, Bangladesh Bank stated that all scheduled banks will remain closed on 5 August 2025, as part of the official public holiday.

The central bank has requested that all stakeholders take necessary preparations in advance and plan their financial transactions accordingly.

On 5 August 2024, ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India following a mass uprising beginning in July against her rule, resulting into the fall of the Awami League government.
