Police arrested Shafiqur, his wife, and two others yesterday, in connection with a case involving the alleged abuse of an 11-year-old domestic help
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has terminated the contract-based appointment of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) Md Shafiqur Rahman following his arrest and incarceration in a criminal case.
In an office order issued today (3 February), the ministry said Shafiqur's contract was cancelled in line with a notification dated 3 February 2026, after he was accused in a criminal case and taken into custody.
To ensure smooth and effective management of the national flag carrier, the ministry has assigned Humayra Sultana, additional secretary (aviation and CA) of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, to perform the additional duties of MD and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines until a permanent appointment is made.
The decision was taken under Section 30(c) of the Bangladesh Biman (Reinstatement and Amendment of the repealed Bangladesh Biman Order, 1972) Act, 2023.
The order was issued with the approval of the appropriate authority and signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Mosammat Shakila Parveen.
Police arrested Shafiqur, his wife, and two others early yesterday (2 February), in connection with a case involving the alleged abuse of an 11-year-old domestic help.
The arrests were made around 3:30am at their residence in Sector 9 of Uttara by Uttara West Police Station. The matter was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division, who said the case was filed over allegations of torture of a domestic worker.
Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Md Rafiq Ahmed said the victim's father filed the case, accusing Shafiqur, his wife, and two others of severe physical abuse.
Shafiqur was appointed MD and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on 4 September 2024. He joined the airline in 1986 as a trainee commercial officer and held several senior positions, including director of Marketing and Sales, director of Administration and Human Resources, and director of Procurement and Logistics Support. He also served as Biman's country manager in Singapore, Thailand, and Greece before retiring in 2017.
