Researchers at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) have successfully unveiled the complete genome sequences of 3 coronaviruses that caused infections in the region.

The genome sequences were conducted on the coronavirus genes that caused the infection to spread in the Jhinaidah, Narail and Bagerhat districts.

Dr Anwar said, "Our researchers are currently analysing the newly unveiled genome sequences. The Research articles on the characteristics of the coronavirus infection in the region will soon be sent to international journals for publication."

"In the future, by conducting metagenome sequencing in our labs we can identify the intensity of the infection among patients.", added Dr Anwar.

Dr Anwar also said that as a new educational facility to successfully conduct coronavirus tests as well as genome sequencings is a great achievement, and he thanked and expressed his gratitude to the concerned department of the university involved in the processes.

The Vice Chancellor also said that the university is constructing a state-of-the-art animal house and green house.

By setting up a BSL-3 laboratory in the future, the research team is ready to carry out more high-quality research, including the development of vaccines to prevent incurable diseases added Dr Anwar.

JUST is the first public university in Bangladesh to get official approval to conduct coronavirus detection tests of suspected coronavirus patients.

It is conducting the coronavirus detection tests of patients of 8 districts in the south-western region of Bangladesh.

Currently the university has conducted 5,270 coronavirus tests among which 806 samples were tested positive.
