Youth posing as CU student for over a year held on campus
He claimed to be a second-year Marine Science student, but no one in the department knew him
Chattogram University (CU) authorities today (2 December) detained a youth who had allegedly been posing as a student for more than a year.
Several students claimed Simanto Bhowmik, 19, had been posing as a student of the Marine Science Department on the campus since 2024, and handed him over to the proctor's office.
CU Proctor Prof Dr Hossain Shaid Shorowardhy said Simanto has been handed over to the university's security office, and legal action will be taken against him.
Speaking to The Business Standard, students said Simanto lived in a rented room near RK Tower in the south campus area.
They had kept him under watch due to his suspicious movements in different places and involvement in repeated financial dealings.
During questioning, Simanto admitted he was not enrolled in any CU department, the students said.
"We've known him for more than a year. His behaviour never gave away that he was fake. After several complaints and doubts, we investigated and confirmed he wasn't a student. When we questioned him today as planned, he denied it at first but eventually confessed," said Md Ikhlas Bin Sultan, a student of the Department of Communication and Journalism.
He added that Simanto had financial transactions with several shops and students, owing around Tk20,000.
Sakhaowat Hossain Siam, a fourth-year philosophy student, said, "We met him near the rail crossing in 2024. Later, we learned that although he claimed to be a second-year Marine Science student, no one in the department knew him."
According to the students, during interrogation, Simanto said he failed the admission test but lied to his family and continued living on campus.
