Will resign and contest polls from Jhenaidah-1: Attorney General Asaduzzaman
Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has announced his decision to resign from office and contest the upcoming national election as an MP candidate from Jhenaidah-1.
He made the announcement today (5 November) during a press conference at his office, following the appeal hearing on the case seeking the restoration of the caretaker government system.
When asked by a reporter whether he would contest from Jhenaidah-1, Asaduzzaman replied, "Yes, I will run for parliament. I have sought nomination for that constituency. I am still serving as the attorney general, but I will resign before the election when the time comes."
Asked whether he was certain about securing nomination, he said confidently, "I am optimistic — one hundred percent."
Asaduzzaman confirmed that he has sought nomination from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and expressed hope that the party would choose him as its candidate.
He was appointed attorney general on 8 August last year after the student-led mass uprising toppled the Awami League government. Before that, he served as the human rights affairs secretary of the BNP's central committee.
According to party sources, Asaduzzaman is expected to contest under the BNP's 'sheaf of paddy' symbol. Since assuming the attorney general post, he has remained active in his constituency, participating in campaigning and various local programmes.
On 3 November, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the party's list of candidates in 237 constituencies for the 13th national polls.
Of Jhenaidah's four constituencies, the party named a candidate in only one, leaving three — including Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa Upazila) — vacant for the time being.
