A suspected member of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead during a gunfight between the members of UPDF and Bangladesh Army-led joint forces at Perachhara area under Naniarchar Upazila of Rangamati district early today (2 January).

A press release from Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the matter.

The joint forces started a search operation at about 5:30am after getting information about a UPDF hideout from intelligence.

But sensing the presence of the law enforcers, they (terrorists) opened fire at them, prompting the law enforces to retaliate and triggering a gunfight.

Subsequently, one of the UPDF (main) members found died on the spot while his accomplices managed to escape the scene.

Later, during the search one assault rifle (M-16), two rounds of MG/Sniper ammunition, 90 rounds of rifle ammunition, one walkie-talkie set and 12 mobile phone sets were recovered from the spot.

Army operation was continuing to trace the escaped terrorists, ISPR added.
