Two people, including a child, were burnt to death in a fire that broke out in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram this morning (24 December).
The incident occurred around 7:45am at Kaderia Para in Ward No 8 of Pomra union, where at least six houses were gutted by the blaze.
The deceased were identified as Rumi Akhter, 50, wife of late Ruhul Amin, and her five-year-old granddaughter Jannat.
Confirming the matter, Abdul Mannan, assistant deputy director (zone-3) of the Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence, told The Business Standard, "They received the fire alert at 8:25am. Two firefighting units reached the spot and extinguished the fire by 9:45am."
"During the rescue operation, we recovered the burnt bodies of the woman and the child from inside the house," he added.
Rangunia Fire Service Inspector Arjun Baroi said the estimated loss from the fire stood at around Tk7 lakh. "Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. An investigation will be conducted if the affected families request it."
When contacted, Rangunia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Nazmul Hasan said fire service and Rangunia police were active at the scene.
"As immediate assistance, Tk20,000 is being provided to the deceased's family from the union parishad. Dry food and blankets are being arranged from the upazila administration, and the process for additional government assistance is underway," he said.
Regarding the cause of the fire, the UNO said initial accounts pointed to a possible electrical short circuit, but the exact reason would be determined after investigation.
According to locals, the fire originated in one of the houses and spread rapidly to nearby structures within moments. Residents immediately called the national emergency helpline 999.
However, by the time the flames were extinguished, Rumi Akhter and her granddaughter were found trapped inside the house and had already died from burn injuries.
Attempts to contact the officer-in-charge of Rangunia Police Station for comments about the investigation were unsuccessful.
