Two men have been arrested in connection with the clash between protesting workers and police last month at a coal-fired power plant in Banshkhali of Chittagong that left at least five dead.

The arrested are Md Jafar (28) and Md Sayed (30). They were arrested from Gandamara of Banshkhali on Monday night.
Confirming their arrests, Banshkhali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Azizul Islam said "The two men have been arrested in a case filed by SS Ahmed Plant's chief coordinator Farooq Ahmed on charges of setting fire to vehicles [during the clash]."

"Zafar has been arrested as the accused in the case and Syed as a suspected offender," he added.

On 17 April, five workers of the SS Power Plant in Banshkhali, owned by S Alam Group and China-based SEPCO3, were shot dead by police during a clash. At least 30 people were injured, including three policemen.

Rasheduzzaman Baig, in-charge of Gandamara Police Outpost, filed a case over the clash accusing 2,000 to 2,500 unidentified persons on the night of the incident.

For the same incident, Farooq Ahmed filed another case, accusing 22 by name with 1,040 unidentified persons. The case mentions the names of several local residents.
