Travel ban imposed on NBR additional commissioner Tarek Hasan
Judge Md Sabbir Fayez of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court passed the order
A Dhaka court today (29 January) imposed a travel ban on Md Tarek Hasan, additional commissioner and first secretary of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
The court also ordered the seizure of a flat in Dhaka registered in his name and the freezing of his two bank accounts, three fixed deposit receipts (FDRs), four life insurance policies and three beneficiary owner (BO) accounts.
Judge Md Sabbir Fayez of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court passed the order following two separate petitions filed by the investigation officer of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
In the petition seeking the travel ban, the ACC said the verification and investigation of the asset statement submitted by Tarek Hasan is currently underway. During the investigation, confidential sources indicated that he may attempt to flee the country, which could hamper the probe.
Therefore, the ACC argued, restricting his foreign travel is necessary in the interest of a proper investigation.
In a separate petition, the ACC said that during the verification and investigation process, it was found that Tarek Hasan owns assets worth approximately Tk29.8 million, including two deed-acquired immovable properties, two bank accounts, three FDRs, three BO accounts and four life insurance policies.
Confidential sources also indicated that he was attempting to transfer or dispose of these assets. If the assets are not seized or frozen, there is a risk of misappropriation, the petition said, adding that urgent action was required to ensure a proper investigation.
