Court orders seizure of assets, travel ban on ex-DMP chief Asaduzzaman, family
The court ordered the seizure of 14.30 acres of land, along with plots and flats, worth Tk22.65 crore, in the names of Asaduzzaman and his family members in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Faridpur.
A Dhaka court today (25 January) ordered the seizure of land and other assets and imposed a travel ban on former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia and several of his family members over corruption allegations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez passed the two separate orders following applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). ACC and court sources confirmed both orders.
The court ordered the seizure of 14.30 acres of land, along with plots and flats, in the names of Asaduzzaman and his family members in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Faridpur. The total value of the assets has been shown as Tk22.65 crore.
Besides Asaduzzaman, the order applies to his wife Afroza Zaman, two sons Asif Shahadat and Asif Mahdin, daughter Aisha Siddika, sisters-in-law Parveen Sultana and Fatematuz Zohra, and brother-in-law Harichur Rahman.
According to the application, various allegations of irregularities and corruption have been brought against Asaduzzaman, his family members and other relatives.
An enquiry into allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income is currently underway, and an enquiry team has been formed, it stated.
The application further states that reliable information suggests attempts were being made to hand over, transfer or misappropriate the assets. It adds that if the immovable assets are not seized, there is a risk of irreparable loss to the state, which could hinder the enquiry.
In a separate order, the court imposed a ban on travelling abroad on Asaduzzaman, his wife Afroza Zaman, sons Asif Shahadat and Asif Mahdin, daughter Aisha Siddika, and brother-in-law Harichur Rahman.
The order followed an application filed on behalf of the ACC by Assistant Director Md Aliaz Hossain.
According to the application, a three-member enquiry team has been formed to investigate allegations that Asaduzzaman, his family members and other relatives acquired movable and immovable assets through various irregularities and corruption.
The application further states that, based on reliable sources, they had attempted to flee abroad by transferring illegally acquired assets. It warns that if they leave the country, the investigation and related records could be obstructed.
"For the sake of a fair enquiry into the allegations, it is absolutely necessary to impose a ban on their travel abroad," the application said.
