Long tailbacks on Dhaka-Ctg Highway cause passenger suffering in Cumilla
Providing the official assessment of the crisis, Daudkandi Highway Police Station OC Iqbal Bahar Majumder stated that a truck had overturned near the Meghna-Gomti Bridge in the early hours of today, temporarily blocking the entire highway
A massive tailback on the Cumilla section of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway has left vehicles at a complete standstill on the Chattogram-bound lane, causing severe distress for hundreds of commuters.
At the time of filing this report at 2:12pm, long lines of vehicles remained paralysed on the busy highway.
Commuters also witnessed heavy traffic on the opposite Dhaka-bound lane, stretching from Putiya in the Eliotganj area of Daudkandi up to the Meghna-Gumti Bridge. This congestion began early this morning (21 May), and persisted till around 11am.
Passengers noted that this marks the third consecutive day that commuters on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway have found themselves caught in severe traffic jams, beginning at dawn.
Badrul Huda Jenu, former president of the Comilla chapter of the Socheton Nagorik Committee (Sonak), recounted his ordeal while attempting to travel to the capital to attend an important programme.
He noted that while vehicles were moving smoothly from Comilla to Eliotganj, he encountered an endless queue immediately after crossing the area. He stated that he had been completely immobilised in the exact same spot since 7am.
Another passenger, Md Mohiuddin, explained that he had started his journey exceptionally early in hopes of bypassing the congestion after hearing reports of highway delays over the past few days.
Trapped in the massive snarl, he lamented that the humid weather was rendering the prolonged delay completely unbearable.
Providing the official assessment of the crisis, Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Bahar Majumder stated that a truck had overturned near the Meghna-Gomti Bridge in the early hours of the morning, temporarily blocking the entire highway.
"We have removed the vehicle. Traffic movement is expected to return to normal shortly," he said.
With only a few days left before the peak of the Eid-ul-Adha holiday travel rush begins, these recurring congestions on the vital national highway are fuelling widespread anxiety among travellers.
