Transport workers leader arrested with illegal arms in Cumilla
A transport workers’ leader, Md Nazmul Islam Shamim, was arrested in Cumilla today (20 December) after a joint RAB–Army raid recovered illegal firearms, ammunition and crime-related tools from his home.
A transport workers' leader was arrested in Cumilla this morning (20 December) in a joint operation by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Bangladesh Army after a large number of illegal firearms, ammunition and crime-related equipment was recovered from his residence.
The arrestee, Md Nazmul Islam Shamim, was arrested following a raid conducted at his house in the Jangalia area of Sadar Dakshin upazila. Members of the Army's 23 Bir and RAB-11 (CPC-2) carried out the operation. Shamim was arrested from near his residence while attempting to flee, RAB-11 (CPC-2) Commander Major Sadman Ibne Alam confirmed.
During the raid, the joint force recovered three pipe guns, 60 rounds of shotgun cartridges, 18 rounds of machine gun ammunition, one round of pistol ammunition and one round of revolver ammunition. In addition, several knives, machetes, Chinese axes and other crime-related tools, along with important documents, were seized from the house.
Nazmul Islam Shamim is the son of late Abdul Halim of Jangalia village in Cumilla Sadar Dakshin upazila. He is known as the vice-president of the Jangalia Bus Terminal Transport Workers' Union.
According to RAB, Shamim has at least seven cases filed against him with Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station and Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station. The cases include charges under the Special Powers Act, riot, attempted murder, causing grievous hurt, and offences related to violence against women and children.
Major Sadman Ibne Alam said the raid was conducted based on confidential intelligence. Legal proceedings are underway in connection with the recovered arms and ammunition.
