A total of Tk8 lakh, which was extorted from the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and the Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce & Industry, has been recovered.

"After the change of government, a group extorted TK5 lakh from the BKMEA and Tk3 lakh from the chamber," BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem said at a press briefing today (1 October).

"As soon as Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce President Masuduzzaman took over, he announced that the extorted money must be recovered," he added.

He also thanked the chamber president for working to recover the money and for protecting the interests of businessmen.

Mentioning that some businessmen in Narayanganj worked to recover the money, Chamber President Masuduzzaman said, "I was able to convince them [businessmen] to recover the money. I am not revealing their names, but this sends a strong message that extorting money from businesses will not be easy.

"We want to conduct business peacefully and without any pressure. I urge all businessmen to inform us of any difficulties, and we will stand by their side," he added.
