A whole village in Pabna's Doharpara is shrouded in mourning after news arrived of the death of a Bangladeshi family of six living in the United States, once a part of their community.

According to villagers, Towhidul Islam and three other family members were shot to death, allegedly by his two sons he was proud of.

Of the two youths – Farhan Towhid, 19, and Tanvir Towhid, 21, – the older brother wrote a suicide note where he said they had been battling depression.

However, relatives and neighbours of the victims said they did not know about the mental problems of the two brothers. The two brothers were very smart and good at their studies. Their father, Sam Towhid, was ever proud of his two sons.

Towhidul, vice president of Citibank, lived in Texas with his family hailing from Pabna's Doharpara.

Police believe the two brothers, Farhan and Tanvir, carried out the carnage on Saturday before turning the weapons on themselves in a chilling crime they plotted months in advance, reports the New York Post.

"The plan was simple. We get two guns. I take one and shoot my sister and grandma, while my brother kills our parents with the other. Then we take ourselves out," Farhan wrote in the suicide note.

"If I killed just myself, they would be miserable," he wrote.

"I love my family. I genuinely do. And that's exactly why I decided to kill them," reads the note.

Texas police recovered the six bodies from a suburban Dallas home in Texas, USA, early Monday. The deceased were identified as Towhidul Islam, 54, his wife Iren Islam, 56, their daughter Farbin Towhid, their two sons Farhan Towhid, 19, and Tanvir Towhid, 21, and Iren's mother, Altafun Nessa, 77.

The septuagenarian woman went to the United States from Pabna to visit with her daughter. Although she was supposed to return to the country, she was trapped because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
