NEIR system will not be shut down: Taiyeb
The National Equipment Identification Register (NEIR) system will not be shut down as mobile shop traders' demands have been addressed, Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief adviser for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, said today (4 January).
Taiyeb confirmed the matter to The Business Standard, following day-long protests by mobile phone traders demanding the withdrawal and postponement of the system.
Earlier, after a meeting with representatives of mobile phone traders, who demonstrated throughout the day in the capital's Karwan Bazar area and clashed with police during attempts to disperse them, Masud Alam, deputy commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Division) told reporters that the NEIR system will remain suspended for the next three months.
At least 20 mobile phone traders were injured and 12 reportedly detained as police dispersed protesters from several key intersections in the capital using baton charges, water cannons, tear shells and sound grenades, as shop owners staged sit-ins.
