Tasnim Jara appeals against rejection of her Dhaka-9 nomination
My supporters want me to contest the election, she says after filing the appeal
Independent candidate Tasnim Jara of the Dhaka-9 constituency has filed an appeal against the cancellation of her nomination papers.
The former NCP leader submitted the appeal shortly before 4pm today (5 January).
After filing the appeal, Jara said, "I have appealed the decision of rejecting my nomination papers. Within a day and a half, 5,000 people have spontaneously signed in support of me. They have shown immense support and set up volunteer booths. We will continue our legal fight respecting this support."
Jara further said, "My supporters want me to contest the election. That is why I have filed the appeal and will pursue all legal paths."
Her lawyer Arman Hossain explained the technical issues behind the appeal.
"We have submitted the list of 1% of voters as required under the Election Commission's Election Management Act. The list is 100% accurate. At the time of collection, the EC website was not operational, preventing us from verifying whether each signatory was a registered voter in Dhaka-9. The voter ID cards clearly listed Dhaka-9 as their constituency. Since verification was not possible then, this issue will be addressed through the proper legal process."
The Election Commission has set up 10 regional booths at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon to process appeals. Candidates can submit their appeals until 5pm on 9 January.
42 appeal to EC on first day
A total of 42 aspiring candidates filed appeals with the Election Commission (EC) today, challenging returning officers' decisions to reject their nomination papers.
Of the appeals submitted, 41 sought reinstatements of candidacy, while one petition called for the cancellation of a valid candidature, EC Public Relations Director Md Ruhul Amin Mallick told reporters this evening.
The appeals included seven from Faridpur, five each from Rajshahi and Cumilla, three each from Rangpur and Khulna, two from Chattogram, and one each from Barishal, Mymensingh, and Dhaka. No appeals were filed from the Sylhet region.
Additionally, BNP candidate MA Hannan filed an appeal seeking cancellation of the independent candidacy of AK Ekramuzzaman in the Brahmanbaria-1 constituency.
