BNP chief spends Tk23 lakh on Dhaka-17 election campaign: EC

BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman spent Tk23 lakh on his campaign in the 13th National Election held in last February, according to his official expense return submitted to the Election Commission.

Voting for the 12 February election was followed by gazette publication of winners in 297 constituencies the next day.
BNP secured an absolute majority to form the government, with Tarique Rahman taking office as prime minister.
Spending breakdown
According to the submitted return, the major expenses were: campaigning Tk5,50,000 while transportation Tk1,10,000, public meetings Tk1,80,000 and election camps Tk3,60,000
Moreover, agents and staff Tk984,000 while accommodation and administration: Tk66,000 and social media promotion Tk50,000
In Dhaka-17, where the total voter count stands at 3,33,777, candidates were allowed to spend up to Tk10 per voter—setting a ceiling of over Tk33.37 lakh.
Tarique's declared expenditure is notably below that threshold.
Under election law, candidates must submit detailed expense returns to the returning officer within 30 days of gazette publication, with copies also sent to the EC Secretariat via registered post.
Parties must submit their total expenditure within 90 days of the gazette.
