Take immediate action to curb rising mob violence in Bangladesh: SUJON urges govt
The civil society organisation expressed grave concern over recent incidents following the July uprising

Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJON) has urged the government to take urgent and effective measures to stop the ongoing wave of mob violence in the country, warning that it is becoming increasingly uncontrollable.
In a statement today (24 June), the civil society organisation expressed grave concern over recent incidents following the July uprising.
The group cited the 22 June incident involving former chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda, who was forcibly taken from his Uttara residence by a group of individuals and handed over to the police after being publicly harassed.
SUJON strongly condemned the act, calling it a blatant violation of the law and Bangladesh's Constitution, specifically Article 35(5), which prohibits cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
The statement added that even if someone is accused of wrongdoing, no citizen has the right to take the law into their own hands. "Legal remedies must be pursued through lawful means."
SUJON also drew attention to another incident on the same day in Lalmonirhat's Gosala Bazar, where two Hindu barbers — a father and son — were assaulted and handed over to police over an alleged case of religious defamation stemming from a minor disagreement at their salon.
The organisation noted that the role of the police in both incidents has raised serious questions.
"These acts of mob justice not only undermine the rule of law but also risk turning into a dangerous 'mob culture'," SUJON warned.
The group demanded impartial investigations into these incidents and urged the government to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
It also called on law enforcement and administrative authorities to treat these developments with the urgency and seriousness they deserve.
