Students celebrate, distribute sweets at TSC after verdict against Hasina
The celebrations began shortly after the verdict was delivered at 3pm.
Students at Dhaka University's TSC erupted in celebration today (17 November) after the International Crimes Tribunal awarded the death sentence to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a case over crimes against humanity committed during last year's July Uprising.
The celebrations began shortly after the verdict was delivered at 3pm. Students chanted slogans and distributed sweets among those gathered at the time.
Among the slogans heard were "Hasina's days are over, Bangladesh will have sweets" and "The news just came, Hasina sent to gallows". Earlier in the day, the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) arranged a live screening of the verdict at TSC.
A large screen was set up at the Payra Chattar, attracting both students and outsiders who began gathering from around 11am.
Duscu International Affairs Secretary Jasim Uddin Khan, Literature and Cultural Secretary Musaddik Ali Ibne Mohammad, and Social Welfare Secretary AB Jobayer were present at the event.
Following the announcement of the verdict, students and members of the public at TSC brought out a victory procession organised by Ducsu.
The procession began from the TSC metro station and was scheduled to move around the entire campus.
Reacting to the verdict, Ducsu Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah said, "Over 17 long years, Bangladesh was turned into a failed state through enforced disappearances, murders, oppression, torture, looting, and extortion. This verdict is not the final one.
"The killer Hasina and her accomplices must be dragged from India and brought to the soil of Bengal to ensure the maximum punishment immediately. The July warriors must remain on the streets until the verdict is executed."
Ducsu Social Welfare Secretary AB Jobayer said, "This verdict does not give us final satisfaction. Our final satisfaction will come when Hasina is brought from Delhi by a rope around her neck and hanged.
"Everyone must remain on the streets until the killer Hasina is brought to Bangladesh and hanged."
